Strategy - Markets – Political Risk – Energy Security

Goal of the Unit will be the combination and interaction of academic work with business concerns and interests. Basic aim will be the raising of awareness about the Eurasian landmass and of its geoeconomic and geostrategic importance for the interests of Greece and western Europe in general. The Unit will deal primarily with the dissemination of information (academic or otherwise) about the strategic importance, the economic impact and the effect it has on global and national markets, on the risks involved in political developments and investment opportunities and on the role in world and regional energy security of the wider area of Eurasia. The overall activities of the Unit will be spread on three main levels:

1. Educational Activities

Courses, seminars and academic symposia and speculation about energy, geostrategic developments and the needs of world oil markets. The Unit at this time will organize optional seminars, round table discussions, design some research schemes for interested students and, occasionally, invite visiting dignitaries for public lectures. The Unit may also undertake contractual tasks of lecturing, teaching or organizing seminars and symposia at various academic or business institutions. It may also organize workshops on various aspects of political technological achievements and breakthroughs (techniques of persuasion, message dissemination, public speaking, attitude identification, knowledgeable forecasting etc).

2. Consultancy Functions

Organize a centre for advanced research into the social science areas of energy issues. The aim will be to promote dialogue between consumers and producers, government and industry, and academics and decisions makers in order to gain a more informed understanding of the factors that influence international energy markets. Research carried out encompasses the economics of petroleum, oil, gas, nuclear power, solar and renewable energy; the politics and sociology of energy; international relations of producing and consuming nations; and the economics and politics of the environment in its relationship with energy. The Unit may serve as a vehicle for two way information flow concerning business and investment opportunities in the wide region of Eurasia as well as a training module for negotiation tactics and initiatives, for venues of contact and deliberations as well as means of assessing risk and opportunity in the area.

3. Communications

Design of the Unit’s website, Organization of a news
module (e-mails, newsletters etc), the setting up of seminars
which would attract the attention of externally looking
businesses and maybe conducting research on specific
(investment oriented) topics. Hub of overall information and data about countries in the area, availability of experts to talk to the media about developments in the region and regular forecasts on changes, prospects and energy and geostrategic relations in the region.
