Ireland's economy fastest growing in European Union

Ireland's economy is now the fastest growing economy in the European Union.

Τhe government needs to keep cutting spending and reducing the debt.

Milton Friedman explains why the Great Recession happened

AEIdeas

"In the video below, Milton Friedman explains how the Great Depression was a failure of government — notably the Federal Reserve — not the private sector.

But in doing so, he also in effect explains how the Fed was responsible for the Great Recession (more on that explanation here) — not business."

Labour’s misdiagnosis: A larger state is not the way to raise living standards A.M.

"To paraphrase the economist John Maynard Keynes, Ed Miliband’s speech yesterday to the Labour Party conference was an extraordinary example of how, starting with a mistake, a remorseless logician can end in Bedlam.

For Miliband, the market has failed to deliver rising prosperity, and it is now time for big government to get back in the game.

While Miliband has indeed identified the symptom of stagnating living standards, his diagnosis of market failure as the cause is wrong.

And his chosen treatment of higher taxes, more spending and state control will exacerbate the deep-seated economic weaknesses we face."

Pick Your Jihad; Pick Your Infidel

The rise of Islamic extremism is not new. It is not a surprise. The mission of jihadists has been clearly broadcast for years:
HAMAS
The Hamas Charter was drafted in 1988. It mentions the word “jihad” 36 times in the charter. Its enemy is spelled out clearly: Jews.

The rise and rebirth of Chinese realpolitik

A study that helps make sense of the past and present of the Asian power

Wealth and Power: China’s Long March to the Twenty-First Century, by Orville Schell and John Delury, Little, Brown (£14.99, $30)

Confucius taught that “propriety and righteousness” were the foundations of the state, and “power and profit” were its enemies. The history of modern China, culminating in the wealth-creating reforms unleashed by Deng Xiaoping, has been dedicated to proving him wrong.
